So, itâs up to us to decide when to go to bed and when to wake up. And the society dictates that we should go to bed at the same hour every evening. However, not many of us count how many hours it takes us to fall asleep.This time of lying in bed waiting for the sleep to strike is, basically, useless. A person has to go to sleep when feeling tired. Itâs better to wake up an hour later than your peers but to be fresh and creative all day than to wake up earlier and walk yawning around the office all day.7. Discipline or routine?When you are getting ready to t ravel, do you make lists of what to buy beforehand? Do you pack your socks and toothbrush? Weirdly enough, this is called routine. Something that you do without overthinking â" you know it works this way. Discipline should come in the same way â" seamlessly.Itâs no amount of force. If you force yourself to sit down and write something just because itâs the deadline tomorrow, you will get nowhere.Real discipline is inbuilt into your routine â" you will sit down to work way before the deadline, you will try a few times, and finally, it will work. There is no pressure of deadlines because you think in advance.8. Discipline in informational exposureEvery day, we scroll social networks for fun without realizing how much informational overload to which weâre exposed. Due to this overload, itâs harder to concentrate on work later. Discipline should come in all spheres of life:social,mental,physical,and online.Use handy apps that calculate and limit your time spent surfing social networks daily.9. Disciplined me timeevalYou cannot limit your me time because on different days you need different amounts of time for it. This will cause lower self-esteem and consequently will affect your creative work. Make sure that you take as much time to recharge as you need.10. Discipline isnât necessarily badAs soon as you come to realize that rules are your ally, you will be able to use them for your benefit. Donât be afraid of them, and donât be scared to break them. Creative process may be messy, but a smart extent of rules will not hurt. Picasso would never be able to discover cubism if he didnât break the rules of realism which was predominant in his era.Most often we define discipline regarding submission to specific rules, controls, and schedules. We also understand that this set of rules was created by someone else, as opposed to our desire to be creative here and now. However, it is time we stopped thinking in such limited terms about discipline and creat ivity as different sides of one coin. Be Ready When Its Time To Talk Money You will be asked for your salary requirements during the online application process, so it is important to know your value at the beginning of your job search. You will also be asked about your salary expectations during a phone screen. Instead of responding with your range, ask ALWAYS ask what the company has budgeted for the position. Survive the company picnic Itâs time for some company team building or bonding. As summer draws to an end, in order to ramp up enthusiasm for the fall again, companies like to host a beach outing, picnic, or some other outdoor event before the weather turns cold. We all know how some of us really feel about them. If you Are one of the lucky ones who truly enjoys them, thatâs awesome! There are plenty of people out there who donât though, and they approach them as a chore sometimes with a feeling of dread. I was honored to be featured in this recent Wall Street Journal career article about how to survive that company picnic and even have a good time! Read article here Here are two things that I wanted to add to this career advice: 1. Have a strategy â" Decide who you would like to most connect with during this time. Is there someone you donât get to talk to often at work but would like to get to know and possibly network with. Identify who those people are and make an effort to reach out. 2. Decide on and communicate a time frame â" You donât have to stick to it to the letter, but if you can only stay for a certain period of time, make that known in advance so people donât think you are just ducking out. Or if you are not looking forward to it, decide on the amount of time that is reasonable for you to make an appearance and be cordial and warm then have a good reason for leaving. If you decide to stay, thatâs fine. But at least itâs not an awkward goodbye when itâs time to go. Handling professional events with ease is a critical piece to your professional development and, they should be handled with care. Many Successful People Are Driven By a Quality No One Likes to Admit Real-estate mogul and âShark Tankâ investor Barbara Corcoran was told sheâd never make it. After dumping her for her secretary in the 1970s, Corcoranâs ex-boyfriend and ex-business partner Ramone Simone told her explicitly: âYouâll never succeed without me.â On an episode of Business Insiderâs podcast, âSuccess! How I Did It,â Corcoran told US editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell that Simoneâs words âjust hit me in the gut and I felt that fever in my body like, âIâll be damned if you ever see me not succeed.â I felt like I would kill not to let that thing happen.â Fast-forward to 2001, when Corcoran sold her real-estate company, The Corcoran Group, for $66 million. Corcoranâs experience having a chip on her shoulder is just one example of a phenomenon thatâs common among successful people, especially entrepreneurs. A little bit of insecurity appears to light a fire under them, motivating them to achieve their goals. Entrepreneurs with a chip on their shoulder want to prove themselves to everyone who has doubted them Betty Liu, the founder and CEO of media-education company Radiate, wrote on Inc. that one key trait of successful people is that they have a chip on their shoulder. She wrote: âI know many warm, engaging, optimistic entrepreneurs who are partly motivated by a common chip on their shoulders â" the need to prove someone or something wrong. In its simplest terms, itâs turning the proverbial lemon into lemonade.â Gary Vaynerchuk, founder of VaynerMedia, alluded to something similar when he told Inc. that many successful entrepreneurs have a chip on their shoulder: âEither you were born with nothing, zero, and youâre just hungrier than the average human. Or, itâs the reverse: You born into a lot of wealth and opportunity and you want to prove that you donât need it, and can do it on your own.â In fact, venture capitalist Mark Suster wrote in a blog post that he actively looks for entrepreneurs with a chip on their shoulder. âThat they have something to prove. That theyâre not afraid to stick their noses up to the establishment,â Suster wrote. Why should insecurity and resentment contribute to professional success? It may come down to your level of confidence. As psychologist Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic wrote for the Harvard Business Review, âlower self-confidence can motivate you to work harder and prepare more: If you are serious about your goals, you will have more incentive to work hard when you lack confidence in your abilities.â Having a chip on your shoulder isnât always a good thing To be sure, having a chip on your shoulder isnât inherently a good thing â" it matters how you channel that lingering resentment. In the blog post, Suster distinguished between the good kind of chip on your shoulder, which makes you say, âIâm going to change the world, just try and stop me,â and the bad kind which makes you say, âInvestors are all lemmings and Iâll prove it.â And Chris Heivly, a cofounder of MapQuest and an entrepreneur in residence at Techstars, wrote on Inc. that while having a chip on your shoulder can boost an entrepreneurâs motivation, âthere are those whose personal version of their chip takes a negative or counter-productive turn to the detriment of the company or themselves.â Heivly gave an example of a founder who whines and makes excuses about why they canât raise as much money as other, more fortunate entrepreneurs. Interestingly, having a chip on your shoulder isnât something thatâs typically lauded in American culture. Amy Chua (the âTiger Momâ) and her husband Jed Rubenfeld, both professors at Yale Law School, wrote a book called âThe Triple Package,â in which they cite insecurity as a key contributor to success. (The other two are believing that youâre exceptional and having impulse control). Chua and Rubenfeld write, in an excerpt for The New York Times: âThat insecurity should be a lever of success is another anathema in American culture. Feelings of inadequacy are cause for concern or even therapy; parents deliberately instilling insecurity in their children is almost unthinkable.â And yet kids who feel like theyâre at some kind of disadvantage â" say, if theyâre the children of immigrants â" may be more motivated to prove their worth. Still, Chamorro-Premuzic points out in HBR that relatively low self-confidence isnât always a good thing. If youâre ânot serious about your goals,â low confidence can be demotivating, he says. If, however, like Corcoran and other entrepreneurs before her, you have a clear goal in mind, that chip on your shoulder may be just the push you need to persevere when obstacles arise.
